Pathfinder Carrying Capacity: A Guide to Hauling Gear

Understanding the Carrying Capacity Rules

The carrying capacity rules in Pathfinder determine how much a character's equipment slows them down. These rules are important to understand when equipping your character for adventure, as carrying too much weight can have a negative impact on their movement and combat abilities.

Calculating Your Carrying Capacity

Your character's carrying capacity is based on their Strength score. The base carrying capacity for a character with a Strength score of 10 is 50 pounds. For each point of Strength above 10, your carrying capacity increases by 5 pounds. In addition to your base carrying capacity, you can also carry additional weight if you are wearing a backpack or other equipment that provides a "strength bonus." A backpack with a strength bonus of +2, for example, would increase your carrying capacity by 10 pounds.

Effects of Encumbrance

Carrying more weight than your carrying capacity can have a number of negative effects on your character: * Reduced Speed: Each 5 pounds of weight over your carrying capacity reduces your speed by 5 feet. * Reduced Armor Class: Each 10 pounds of weight over your carrying capacity reduces your Armor Class by 1. * Increased Fatigue: Prolonged periods of carrying heavy loads can lead to fatigue, which can reduce your character's strength and stamina.

Tips for Managing Encumbrance

There are a number of things you can do to reduce the negative effects of encumbrance: * Choose equipment wisely: Only carry the gear that you actually need for your adventure. * Use pack animals or wagons: If you have to carry a lot of weight, consider hiring pack animals or using a wagon to transport your gear. * Take breaks: If you are carrying a heavy load, be sure to take frequent breaks to rest and avoid fatigue. By understanding the carrying capacity rules and following these tips, you can ensure that your character can carry the gear they need without sacrificing their mobility or combat effectiveness.
