A Rare Sight For Southerners

The Northern Lights Dance Over the US as a Geomagnetic Storm Approaches

A Rare Sight for Southerners

A stunning aurora is painting the sky shades of pink, purple, and green as it spreads into locations it rarely visits. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a geomagnetic storm watch for March 24-25, 2024, as a coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with an X11 flare is expected to hit Earth.

Potential Impacts

A severe geomagnetic storm has the potential to knock out power and electronics, particularly in areas near the poles. Additional solar eruptions could cause geomagnetic storm conditions to persist through the weekend.

Advice for Southerners

NOAA said people as far south as Alabama may have seen the aurora on March 25th, 2024. If you live in an area where the aurora is visible, be sure to step outside and enjoy the show! Take precautions to protect your electronics from potential power surges.
